Did you know?
Water runs out quickly
Kent fire engines can only carry enough water in their tanks to supply a typical lay-flat hose for a few minutes of continuous use. Where a hydrant isn't available, a second fire engine is the quickest way for a team to get more water.
More firefighters, more options
The majority of fire engines in Kent have four crew members on board. The extra people that come with a second fire engine allow for emergency backups, first aid including life-saving CPR, and ladder rescues from windows and balconies.
Crews do more than fires
Fire crews in Kent don't just respond to fires. They free people trapped in road traffic collisions, perform inland water rescues and carry out rescues from height.
Why does this matter now?
Busy areas will be stretched thin overnight
Dartford and Thames-side are two of the busiest fire stations in the county; they get more call-outs than many London Fire Brigade stations do.
Council tax has increased
These proposals come after a 3.99% increase in council tax for Kent residents, who will be paying an average of £67 extra per year for this reduced cover.
Important sites are affected
Notable sites directly impacted by these changes include Chartwell House (the former home of Winston Churchill), the Dartford Crossing and the Gravesend Gurdwara.
